OCCULTATION OF HIP 62565 BY II Deimos
2014 June 17


A 1.5 second occultation Deimos, one of Mars' small moons, was recorded by Bill Hanna, using ADVS Video technique.

No clearly observed misses were recorded for this event.

Discussion:

The circle above is plotted at the expected 12 km diameter of Deimos. With only one chord it is not possible to determine whether Bill was north or south of the central line of the event. However, assuming the updated prediction was approximately correct the chord would suggest that the it lie within a few km of the central portion of Deimos.

This was a difficult event to observe as Deimos stays very close to Mars. The images below show Deimos just before and just after occultation

Some of the new Tangra features designed to make Jupiter moon results easier to scan helped in getting this clean result.

By the way - this is the first observed occultation by a Martian satellite. Well done Bill!
